Immerse yourself in Thai culture this winter and learn up close from local medical professionals! Experience a variety of healthcare practices including medical, dental, physical therapy, traditional medicine, and chiropractic care. Led by experienced faculty-leaders Theresa Curtis and Christa Chatfield, this program will broaden your understanding of medical practices and expose you to tha fascinating culture of Thailand.

Activities include a tour of Chang Mai, visit to the night bazaar and Sunday street market, volunteering at a dog sanctuary and elephant rescue, meeting and visiting with Thai medical and nursing students over a meal, meeting with a monk and doing a meditation session, visiting a children's home that began as an orphanage for children with HIV, a paddy field to learn about rice planting, and dinner with local Thai families.

Application Requirements:

  • 2.5 GPA
  • Undergraduate or Graduate student status
  • Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination (required by Thai hospitals that will be visited)

  • September 20th, 2024 (Study Abroad Scholarship Deadline for Cortland students is October 1st)

2025 Program Itinerary

Departure: Jan 2nd, 2025, to Changi Mai, Thailand (via Newark or JFK)

The entire trip (Jan 3- Jan 22) remains in Chang Mai at local medical facilities, with day trips to local caves, rice fields, a lake and a local school.

Return, Jan 22nd to New York

Enjoy the leisure and natural beauty of Thailand through a visit to Doi Suthep and Doi Pui (parks with temples and important natural history). Additional visits to Chiang Dao Caves & Sticky Waterfall, Buak Hard public park, elephant nature park, Huay Tung Tao lake and rustic village.

Visit to dog sanctuary and elephant rescue will include lecture on whole health approach to human disease management that relates to a better understanding of global health issues. A monk will lead a talk and activitity to practice mediation. Similarly, a lecture on healthcare system and a meal with local students (nursing and medical students) will take place.


Travel Information:

All Participants will fly to Chiang Mai, Thailand together on a group flight. Information about the flight will be available after the application deadline.


Accommodations and Meals:

Hotels: The entire group will stay in well-established and centrally located hotels in Chiang Mai to ensure comfort and security. Hotel selection will prioritize safety, cleanliness, and proximity to healthcare facilities. There will be 2-4 students per room, but it will be a group living situation, where there are separate bedrooms with large, shared living spaces. The accommodation is air-conditioned and has Internet access.

Meals will be arranged at local restaurants giving students a chance to sample a wide range of Thai dishes. All restaurants and food providers will adhere to local health and safety regulations. Most food is included (except a few weekends). Breakfast will include things like toast, cereal, eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, and fresh fruit. Lunch and dinners will vary. Students will generally find something that suits their palate.

Bottled water will be provided to students throughout the program to ensure access to safe drinking water.
