Projects Abroad is a provider of internship and volunteering placements in a variety of professional fields in almost 20 countries. Students can gain 1 academic credit per 40 hours of intern or volunteer work by completing an online International Internship Reflective Practice course through the SUNY Cortland International Programs Office, or by working with a faculty member or internships supervisor in their home department.

Students can customize their own program by selecting the number of weeks and amount of credit they would like to receive.

Undergraduate or Graduate credit options available.

Program Dates:

Dates vary based on the desired length of your program. See the Projects Abroad website for more details. Semester students must complete a minimum of 12 weeks to receive 12 credits in order to maintain full-time status.

Academic Credit:

In order to receive academic credit for your internship experience all students must work with an academic coordinator who will provide and oversee academic and reflective assignments related to your experience.

For students who wish to gain internship credit specific to their department, they should work with a faculty member or designated internship supervisor in their home department.

Student should check with their department secretary, academic advisor, or department chair to determine the appropriate person.

While the Projects Abroad program is flexible regarding the number of weeks and number of credits for most placements, SUNY Cortland requires students participate for a minimum of 3 weeks and 3 credits. Keep in mind 40 hours of work (typically one full-time week) equals one credit. Once a participant commits to a certain number of weeks/credits this can not be changed after departure.

For SUNY Cortland students, grades awarded for the internship are as follows; Honors (H), Satisfactory (S), Unsatisfactory (U). For Other-SUNY students, please check with your home campus to see if you require a letter grade (A-F) or can receive an H/S/U per the above.

Program Costs:

Costs vary based on the length of program and credits desired. Please contact the International Programs Office for more information or to see a sample budget.

Accepted students will pay a $295.00 deposit to Projects Abroad. No other payment is due to Projects Abroad. The remainder of the Projects Abroad Fee will be paid to SUNY Cortland.

Student Testimonial and Student Mentors:

Madilyn Sausville (Completed project in Fiji during Spring 2020): "My internship with Projects Abroad has been a once in a lifetime experience. The program thrives on bringing people together from all across the world to work on common goals that help to shape the surrounding communities and their volunteers. I have met incredible individuals on my travels, have gained lifelong friends, and have learned so much about myself in the process."
