Founded in 1880, St. Aloysius College (SAC), is a Jesuit institution in the heart of Mangalore, a medium-sized city on the southwest coast of India. The College, a liberal arts institution offering courses in a wide range of fields, aims to support the education and professional development of young people from all sectors of Indian society, with students hailing from diverse socio-economic and religious backgrounds.

SAC offers undergraduate courses in biochemistry, biotechnology, business, chemistry, computer science, economics, electronics, environmental sciences, history, journalism, mathematics, microbiology, physics, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, statistics, and zoology. The following special interest courses are also available: the Indian Constitution, Human Rights, Values Education, Gender Equity, and Sustainability. Study abroad students studying at SAC through SUNY Cortland can take three to four classes during the semester, for a total of 12-15 credits. This program also offers students the opportunity to enhance their classroom-based learning through internships and service-learning excursions organized by the College.

Program participants' academic and living experiences involve a full immersion in south Indian society. Study abroad students live in boarding houses or residence halls on or near the SAC campus. As part of a select few international student on the SAC campus, students studying abroad through SUNY Cortland interact daily with Indian students on the campus, in the classrooms, and on optional field trips.

Course Information:

Students will choose their courses from SAC's selection of undergraduate courses available. Each course will be worth 3-4 credits, and will include a written paper assignment and/or field work, as well as a final exam. For questions about possible courses, please contact faculty leaders, Sharon Steadman or Girish Bhat (contact information below).

Students will also have the opportunity to choose from several 3-4 credit language courses, including Hindi, Kanada, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Konkany, and French.

Students can also take the following five shorter courses for a combined for 4-6 credits:

  • Indian Constitution
  • Human Rights Program
  • Value Education Course
  • Gender Equity Course

SAC assigns a faculty mentor to international students who will meet with them and offer guidance/advice throughout the semester.

Internships
Students will also have the option of participating in an internship during the semester (to be arranged with Drs. Bhat and Steadman) for credits ranging from 1-6 credit hours. Forty hours of internship work typically equals 1 academic credit.


Faculty Leaders
Prof. Girish Bhat (History) and Prof. Sharon Steadman (Anthropology) will accompany program participants to Mangalore for about one week to help students with cultural adjustment and logistics.


Accomodations
Students will live in a shared apartment located near the campus. Cost of accommodations is included in the program fee.
