Spending a semester or a year abroad at Federation University Australia (formerly the University of Ballarat) offers students a unique opportunity for adventure, travel, learning about Australian people and culture, as well as a distinct academic challenge in many areas of coursework.

Federation University Australia, established in 1870, is the third oldest educational institution in Australia. Federation University Australia is located in the historical city of Ballarat, state of Victoria, about one hour easy train or bus commute to the cosmopolitan capital, Melbourne, and an hour to the coastal city of Geelong.

Since the university's inception, the student population has grown to more than 18,000 students undertaking studies in 50 specialized areas across nine schools. The University Arts Academy offers performing, fine and visual and creative arts programs. Other schools within the university offer programs in Social Sciences & Humanities, Business, Education, Engineering, Hair & Beauty, Human Movement and Sport Sciences, Physical Education, Information Technology & Mathematical Sciences, Nursing, Sciences. 

Tremendous resources are available at the university, including superb library facilities, an ultra-modern aquatic fitness center, a gymnasium, and numerous shops and cafes.

The city of Ballarat has a unique small-town feel, with many big-city amenities within walking distance or a short bus ride. With 82,000 residents, Ballarat enjoys a wide variety of services, including many educational institutions, medical services, places of worship, clubs, cinemas, shopping centers, world-class sporting facilities and celebrated tourist destinations such as Sovereign Hill, Eureka Stockade Center, and Ballarat Wildlife Park.

At Federation University each course is 20 Australian Credit Units or 4 US Credits. Students should plan to enroll in at least 3 courses (= 60 Australian Credit Units or 12 US Credits). Please consult with the SUNY Cortland International Programs Office as all courses are not offered every semester.


Accommodations:

Once accepted both by Cortland and by Federation University students will be invited to apply for on-campus housing through Fed Uni's housing portal.

Most students stay in one of the two options below:

Bella Guerin Hall (self-catered)
