The Summer Teacher Institute in Western Belize is designed to enhance understanding of a variety of concepts and issues in environmental education through participation in a cross-cultural learning experience. Learning will occur through an array of hands-on experiences, active participation in field research, and ongoing collaboration with individuals in the education field.

Curricula will focus on Ancient Mayan civilization, Archeology, Eco-tourism, Conservation, and acquiring an understanding and appreciation of the rain-forest. The program will be further enhanced by related excursions, presentations by local experts in the environmental field, and cultural experiences and events.

Through cross-cultural collaborations with Belizean teachers, participants will acquire first-hand knowledge and enhanced understanding of a variety of concepts and issues in environmental education.

The Institute is designed for NY State Master Teachers only.

  • This program is limited to 12 participant maximum. 
    • Preference is given to Master Teacher applicants on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This program is limited to 12 participant maximum. Preference is given to Master Teacher applicants on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Tropical Education Center at the Belize Zoo and Camp Casitas at the Macal River Jungle Camp


Program Costs:

All participants will be responsible for paying for their own airfare to Belize City (approximately $900 - luggage fees are additional), SUNY mandatory Study Abroad Accident and Illness Insurance ($25.38), and meal costs when not at the Tropical Education Center or Macal River Camp (estimate 5 meals @ $10- $15 each).
